Sensitivity Conjecture and Log-rank Conjecture for functions with small alternating numbers

    Get PDF
The Sensitivity Conjecture and the Log-rank Conjecture are among the most important and challenging problems in concrete complexity. Incidentally, the Sensitivity Conjecture is known to hold for monotone functions, and so is the Log-rank Conjecture for f(x∧y)f(x \wedge y) and f(x⊕y)f(x\oplus y) with monotone functions ff, where ∧\wedge and ⊕\oplus are bit-wise AND and XOR, respectively. In this paper, we extend these results to functions ff which alternate values for a relatively small number of times on any monotone path from 0n0^n to 1n1^n. These deepen our understandings of the two conjectures, and contribute to the recent line of research on functions with small alternating numbers

In this thesis, an integrated rotorcraft multidisciplinary simulation framework has been developed to comprehensively evaluate the potential of the rotorcraft adopting a recuperator under various flight conditions as well as at mission levels. Through the execution of multi-objective genetic algorithm (GA) optimization, the Pareto front model is derived qualifying the associated interdependency and trade-off between the fuel saving potential and recuperator weight penalty. The proposed methodology proves to be a computationally efficient tool for the multidisciplinary design and optimization of the recuperated rotorcraft powerplant system.

Traditional Chinese medicine herbal mixture LQ arrests FUCCI-expressing HeLa cells in G₀/G₁ phase in 2D plastic, 2.5D Matrigel, and 3D Gelfoam culture visualized with FUCCI imaging.

We used the fluorescence ubiquitination-based cell cycle indicator (FUCCI) to monitor cell cycle arrest after treatment of FUCCI-expressing HeLa cells (FUCCI-HeLa) with a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal mixture LQ, previously shown to have anti-tumor and anti-metastatic activity in mouse models. Paclitaxel was used as the positive control. In 2D monolayer culture, the untreated control had approximately 45% of the cells in S/G₂/M phase. In contrast, the LQ-treated cells (9 mg/ml) were mostly in the G₀/G₁ (>90%) after 72 hours. After treatment with paclitaxel (0.01 ÎŒm), for 72 hours, 95% of the cells were in S/G₂/M. In 2.5D Matrigel culture, the colonies in the untreated control group had 40% of the cells in S/G₂/M. LQ arrested the cells in G₀/G₁ after 72 hours. Paclitaxel arrested almost all the cells in S/G₂/M after 72 hours. In 3D Gelfoam culture, the untreated control culture had approximately 45% of cells in G₂/M. In contrast, the LQ-treated cells were mostly in G₀/G₁ phase (>80%) after 72 hours treatment. Paclitaxel resulted in 90% of the cells arrested in S/G₂/M after 72 hours. The present report suggests the non-toxic LQ has potential to maintain cancers in a quiescent state for long periods of time

For evaluating performance of nonlinear features and iterative and non-iterative classification algorithms (i.e. kernel support vector machine (KSVM), random forest (RaF), least squares SVM (LS-SVM) and multi-surface proximal SVM based oblique RaF (ORaF) for ECG quality assessment we compared the four algorithms on 7 feature schemes yielded from 27 linear and nonlinear features including four features derived from a new encoding Lempel–Ziv complexity (ELZC) and the other 26 features. Seven feature schemes include the first scheme consisting of 7 waveform features, the second consisting of 15 waveform and frequency features, the third consisting of 19 waveform, frequency and approximate entropy (ApEn) features, the fourth consisting of 19 waveform, frequency and permutation entropy (PE) features, the fifth consisting of 19 waveform, frequency and ELZC features, the sixth consisting of 23 waveform, frequency, PE and ELZC features, and the last consisting of all 27 features. Up to 1500 mobile ECG recordings from the Physionet/Computing in Cardiology Challenge 2011 were employed in this study. Three indices i.e., sensitivity (Se), specificity (Sp) and accuracy (Acc), were used for evaluating performances of the classifiers on the seven feature schemes, respectively. The experiment results indicated PE and ELZC can help to improve performance of the aforementioned four classifiers for assessing ECG quality. Using all features except ApEn features obtained the best performances for each classifier. For this sixth scheme, the LS-SVM yielded the highest Acc of 92.20% on hidden test data, as well as a relatively high Acc of 93.60% on training data. Compared with the other classifiers, the LS-SVM classifier also demonstrated the superior generalization ability

Numerical Simulation of Discharge Process in the Single Screw Compressor

    Get PDF
In the process of the single screw air compressor, the symmetrical grooves of the compressor are periodically connected with the discharge ports and the gas enters the discharge chamber or flows back from chamber, generating gas pulsation. The gas pulsation increases the flowing loss to bring additional energy loss, meanwhile the gas pulsation is the one of main reasons for the generation of vibration and noise. The thermodynamic model of the compression chamber and the discharge chamber of a single screw air compressor is established in this paper taking the discharge chamber structure and the flow resistance into consideration. The working process in discharge chamber is simulated base on the thermodynamic model. In addition, the influence of speed and back pressure on the pressure in the discharge chamber is investigated in detail. The analysis results provide a basis for optimum design of structure and reduction of vibration and noise

Time delay estimation in the ultrasonic flowmeter in the oil well

AbstractA new prototype of ultrasonic flowmeter used in the oil well is presented. The flowmeter depends on the time delay between the propagating times of the downstream and upstream ultrasonic pulses. The ultrasonic passageway is slanted to prevent the disadvantage introduced by the high viscosity of the oil. Two method of time delay estimation: threshold and cross-correlation are both studied and realized
